Her father, mother, brothers, aunts and uncles were students of nature. On weekends they camped in the woods near their Washington, D.C. home, climbed trees to study owls, gathered edible plants and made fish hooks from twigs. Her first pet was a turkey vulture. In third grade she began writing and hasn't stopped yet. She has written over 100 books. Her book, Julie of the Wolves won the prestigious Newbery Medal, the American Library Association's award for the most distinguished contribution to literature for children, in 1973. My Side of the Mountain, the story of a boy and a falcon surviving on a mountain together, was a 1960 Newbery Honor Book. She has also received 20 other awards. She attended Penn State University graduating with a degree in Science and Literature. In the 1940s she was a reporter for The Washington Post and a member of the White House Press Corps. After her children were born she returned to her love of nature and brought owls, robins, mink, sea gulls, tarantulas - 173 wild animals into their home and backyard. These became characters in her books and, although always free to go, they would stay with the family until the sun changed their behavior and they migrated or went off to seek partners of their own kind.

Number of Pages: 170

Dimensions: 0.5 x 7.5 x 5.1 IN

Illustrated: Yes

Publication Date: July 02, 2019

Award: Newbery Medal (1973)

Accelerated Reader:

Quiz Name: Julie of the Wolves

Interest Level: Middle Grades, 4-8

Reading Level: 5.8

Point Value: 6

Report copyright infringement

by Lois Lowry (Author)

The unforgettable Newbery Medal-winning novel from Lois Lowry. Often scorned by neighbors for her family's erratic and eccentric behavior--such as her father Johnny's taste for alcohol and Aunt Sissy's habit of marrying serially without the formality of divorce--no one, least of all Francie, could say that the Nolans' life lacked drama. By turns overwhelming, heartbreaking, and uplifting, the Nolans' daily experiences are raw with honestly and tenderly threaded with family connectedness. Betty Smith has, in the pages of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, captured the joys of humble Williamsburg life--from "junk day" on Saturdays, when the children traded their weekly take for pennies, to the special excitement of holidays, bringing cause for celebration and revelry. Smith has created a work of literary art that brilliantly captures a unique time and place as well as deeply resonant moments of universal experience. Jeff came to know the Watie men only too well.

He was probably the only soldier in the West to see the Civil War from both sides and live to tell about it. Amid the roar of cannon and the swish of flying grape, Jeff learned what it meant to fight in battle. He learned how it felt never to have enough to eat, to forage for his food or starve. He saw the green fields of Kansas and Okla-homa laid waste by Watie's raiding parties, homes gutted, precious corn deliberately uprooted. In 1908 Montgomery produced her first full-length novel, titled 'Anne of Green Gables'. Birch (Illustrator)

"The Wouldbegoods" is a 1901 novel by English author Edith Nesbit that continues the story of the Bastable children and is a sequel to "The Story of the Treasure Seekers". As a result of bad behaviour, Oswald, Dora, Dicky, Alice, Noel, and Horace Octavius Bastable are sent off to the countryside, where they promise to utterly reform themselves. However, their intention of performing good deeds seems to land them in as much trouble as before, and sometimes even more so. Edith Nesbit (1858 - 1924) was an English poet and author. She is perhaps best remembered for her children's literature, publishing more than 60 such books under the name E. Nesbit. Tom Sawyer appears in three other novels by Twain: Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), Tom Sawyer Abroad (1894), and Tom Sawyer, Detective (1896).

This case laminate collector's edition includes a Victorian inspired dust-jacket.

Number of Pages: 188

Dimensions: 0.56 x 9 x 6 IN

Publication Date: January 26, 2021

Report copyright infringement

by Mark Twain (Author), True Williams (Illustrator)

"Although my book is intended mainly for the entertainment of boys and girls, I hope it will not be shunned by men and women, for part of my plan has been to try to pleasantly remind adults of what they once were themselves, and of how they felt and thought and talked, and what queer enterprises they sometimes engaged in." -Mark Twain (1876)

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876), a masterpiece of American literature by Mark Twain, describes the world of boyhood in nineteenth century rural America. Classic and unforgettable tales that span the author's career are included, such as "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County", which is Twain's most famous short story and was his first great success as an author. It is the unforgettable tale of Jim Smiley, the gambler who will bet on anything including a frog-jumping competition. Also included is the fascinating and unfinished final novel by Twain, "The Mysterious Stranger", which he worked on over a period of several years from 1897 to 1908 and was finally published after his death. The story takes place several hundred years ago and features a mysterious character who is revealed to be Satan himself. Far darker, more serious, and mature than Twain's earlier works, this final story grapples with challenging and important concerns about the moral failings of men and the fate of the human race.

Number of Pages: 116

Dimensions: 0.24 x 11 x 8.5 IN

Publication Date: May 28, 2024

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Collector's Edition) (Laminated Hardback with Jacket) - Hardcover

Report copyright infringement

by Mark Twain (Author)

Collector's Edition Laminated Hardback with Jacket

On the run from a violent father and a stifling life, young Huck Finn finds unexpected freedom on a raft drifting down the mighty Mississippi.
